Setting Up Your HP Printer: From Unboxing to First Print

Getting a new HP printer up and running doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you've purchased an HP DeskJet, OfficeJet, ENVY, or LaserJet, the core setup process follows a familiar path. This guide walks you through every step so you can start printing with confidence.

What You'll Need

  • Your HP printer and all box contents
  • A power outlet near your workspace
  • Your computer or mobile device
  • A USB cable (optional, for wired setup) or your Wi-Fi network name and password
  • An internet connection to download drivers

Step 1: Unbox and Inspect Your Printer

Carefully remove your printer from the box and place it on a stable, flat surface. Remove all tape, cardboard inserts, and protective foam from the inside and outside of the printer. Check that you have the following in the box:

  • The printer unit
  • Ink cartridges (starter or full)
  • Power cord
  • Setup guide / quick start booklet

Important: Do not discard the packaging until you've confirmed the printer works correctly in case a return is needed.

Step 2: Connect the Power and Power On

Plug the power cord into the back of the printer and then into a wall outlet. Press the Power button. The printer will go through an initialization sequence — lights may flash and the carriage may move. Wait until it comes to a full stop before proceeding.

Step 3: Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the ink cartridge access door (usually on the front). The carriage will move to the center. Remove each cartridge from its protective packaging and peel off the orange or pink pull tab covering the contacts and nozzles.

  1. Slide each cartridge into the correct slot — black ink goes in the right slot, color (tri-color) goes in the left.
  2. Push each cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.
  3. Close the access door.

The printer will automatically run a cartridge alignment and may print an alignment page. Follow the on-screen instructions if prompted.

Step 4: Load Paper into the Paper Tray

Pull out the paper tray (usually at the bottom front) and load a stack of plain white paper. Adjust the paper width guides so they gently touch the edges of the paper without bending it. Slide the tray back in until it clicks.

Step 5: Install HP Printer Software and Drivers

To get the best experience and full functionality, install the official HP software:

  1. Visit 123.hp.com on your computer.
  2. Enter your printer model number when prompted.
  3. Download and run the installer.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions — the installer will guide you through connecting the printer via Wi-Fi or USB.

Alternatively, on Windows 10/11, you can go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device and Windows will locate and install a basic driver automatically.

Step 6: Print a Test Page

Once the software is installed and the printer is connected, print a test page to confirm everything is working:

  • Windows: Go to Settings > Printers & scanners, select your printer, click Print a test page.
  • Mac: Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click Print Test Page.
